This document presents the context and benefits of the prohibition on the inclusion of new diesel vehicles in the urban bus fleet of the city of São Paulo, starting October 17, 2022. The following analysis suggests that the exclusive introduction of zero-emission vehicles is essential to achieve the goals of 2,600 electric buses by 2024 and the 50% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2028 established by the São Paulo Climate Law. Had this prohibition not been established, the introduction of new diesel vehicles would compromise compliance with the law or result in the need for a future accelerated replacement of diesel vehicles less than 10 years old with zero-emission technologies, increasing costs and negatively impacting the economic-financial balance of the system.
