Simulation for the preliminary sizing of fleet and energy demand of the electric bus system in Greater Valparaíso, Chile

2026 Download available: ES

This study presents a technical-operational simulation to support the transition to electric buses in Greater Valparaíso, considering two transport lines (A and B) and two energy consumption scenarios (optimistic at 0.83 kWh/km and conservative at 1.05 kWh/km). In the higher consumption scenario, a failure to meet the minimum battery level (25% state of charge) was identified, leading to two proposed alternatives: relaxing the nighttime charging window (currently restricted between 4:00 p.m. and 12:00 a.m.) or increasing battery capacity from 215 kWh to 278 kWh. Both options make the operation feasible without increasing the fleet (41 buses in total), requiring a charging infrastructure of approximately 1.08 MW and eight simultaneous chargers. The report concludes that small variations in energy consumption significantly impact fleet and infrastructure sizing, and recommends conducting pilot tests to validate real consumption before making final investment decisions.
