Electric bus pilots in the public transportation system of the city of Medellín

This report presents the conclusions obtained from the zero-emission bus pilots carried out for the companies Flota Nueva Villa and Expreso Campo Valdés, as well as the lessons learned in similar new vehicular technology testing processes in the city of Medellín and the other municipalities that make up the Metropolitan Area of the Aburrá Valley.

The results indicate that the implementation of electric buses in commercial operations is recommendable from operational, financial, and environmental perspectives. Operationally, performance was adequate, meeting technical requirements and suggesting possible adjustments to reduce energy consumption. Financially, a 30–38% reduction in energy costs was observed compared to diesel buses. Environmentally, the operation of electric buses avoided the emission of CO2 and PM2.5.

This report is a publication of the Zero Emission Bus Rapid-Deployment Accelerator (ZEBRA) initiative, led by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) and the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, with the main objective of combating global warming by transforming the bus market in Latin American cities toward zero-emission technologies.
